The Color Purple
Purple is a beautiful mix of colors, combining the calm and stable blues with the energy and vibrance of red. Throughout our time purple has always drawn various meanings, including mystery, spirituality, and even wealth.
Like many colors in early civilization, the color purple was hard to come by. Even in nature it was a rare occurrence to see purple, thus adding to it’s allure and mystery. Purple dye for clothes was so rare, that even Roman emperor Caesar decreed that nobody but Roman emperor could wear clothing with purple, and Nero made it even punishable by death!
That’s one way to keep a color scarce.
Purple isn’t quite as rare in modern photography and is used quite often to set a mood of or tell a story. We might encounter it from a vista of an early morning mountain range, to back-alley neon lights, to the color of a gorgeous dress. Depending on the hue, purple can set a relaxing scene or a bright energetic setting.
Some of our favorite photos in Purple.
We’re big fans of purple ourselves. That’s why we’ve curated a list of our favorite images from photographers around the world that you can use to spark some creative color usage of your own. Feel free to download and print any of these images on your own Lifeprint Printer!
